The $1.6 billion facility, located on a 153-acre property in the towns of Mount Pleasant and Greenburgh, will provide enhanced disinfection for the Catskill-Delaware water system, which currently provides 90% of the drinking water for nine million New Yorkers. Each of the UV disinfection units will be able to treat up to 40 million gallons of water per day. The project currently employs 400 workers on site, and, when completed in 2012, will be the largest ultraviolet disinfection facility in the world. The facility will be able to treat over two billion gallons of water per day.
Hirani is responsible for all As-Built survey work to include structural and mechanical features within the main facility and pump houses. We were on-call to provide site verification that the precision of the construction adheres to the strict standards that are required by our client. Some of these surveys included location and mapping of the connections into and out of the aqueduct and all utilities and roadways coming and going from the facility into the town grid. Hirani has also provided GPS control on-site and in the outlying areas for Archaeological and topographic location; the establishment of property line and verification of pertinent bench marks and wetlands surveys for new construction. All topographic, structural, and man-made features have been located by GPS, electronic total station with LIDAR capabilities (utilizing a Ranger Data Collector) and a Differential level.
BWS Trailer Complex
As part of the plant construction a working site to act as headquarters for the engineering/construction personnel was required. Hirani, as the site/civil engineer, was responsible for the design of the trailer office complex required. Hirani specifically developed site, demolition, grading & drainage, and utility plans, and details for the design. In addition Hirani designed the structural slab supporting the trailers, the decking and staircases to access the trailers, the connection to existing utilities, and the preparation of the Fire Protection and Architectural Egress Plans.
