Project Highlights:
  • Structural Inspection and Analysis

Central Park Zoo

Hirani Engineering & Land Surveying, P.C. was engaged to perform structural inspections and analysis of multiple buildings within the Central Park Zoo in New York, NY. The objective was to evaluate the adequacy of existing mezzanine, attic, and roof framing systems to support the proposed installation of electrical and HVAC equipment, including air handlers and condensing units.

Scope of Work:

  • Conducted visual inspections of exposed framing in the Tropical Building, Animal Hospital and Receiving Area, Cafeteria, Administrative Building, and Visitor’s Area.

  • Performed a feasibility study to assess whether existing structural systems could accommodate the additional loads from new mechanical installations.

  • Evaluated available limited historical drawings (from 1984) to supplement field inspections.

  • Due to operational constraints, invasive testing was not feasible, and all assessments were based on non-destructive evaluation methods.

The proposed equipment upgrades aim to improve energy efficiency and building performance across the zoo complex, with Hirani’s study ensuring that the structural integrity of the buildings can safely accommodate the new installations.
